Primark joins Make Fashion Circular initiative

Published
May 18, 2018

Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Make Fashion Circular initiative has gained a new supporter. Fast-fashion giant Primark has become a participant in the initiative, which aims to radically redesign the fashion industry by creating a circular economy for fashion around the world.

The move is part of Primark’s environmental sustainability strategy, developed to reduce the clothing chain’s impact on the environment.

As participant, Primark will embrace the three key principles of the initiative: business models that keep clothes in use; materials that are renewable and safe; and solutions that turn used clothes into new clothes.

It joins Make Fashion Circular’s core partners Burberry Group, Gap, H&M, HSBC, Nike and Stella McCartney. The initiative has secured 16 supporters in total since its launch in 2017.

The programme aims to ensure the fashion industry evolves into a sustainable sector that can benefit society and the environment. It was founded in May last year at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit as the Circular Fibres Initiative.

“For the fashion industry to thrive in the future we must replace the take-make-dispose model, which is worn out. We need a circular economy for fashion in which clothes are kept at their highest value and designed from the outset to never end up as waste,” explained Ellen MacArthur, founder of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in a press release.

“By joining forces to Make Fashion Circular we can harness the creativity and innovation that is at the heart of this USD 1.3 trillion industry to create a system that delivers benefits for everyone.”
